June 16, 2011: Menehunes go 12-0 and win the Brea League Champions!
Menehune Ohana! Photo by Ernest Ramirez
Menehunes do it again! They win another championship with a perfect 12-0 record. Menehunes defeat Old Skool 81 to 67 in the Brea Championship game. Menehunes faced Old Skool the first game of the season and won in overtime by 1point, 84 to 83. So everyone knew that this game was going to be a physical and good game to watch. Menehunes started off slow then really picked it up once Billy Hofman and Ryan Lee started firing on all cylinders out there in the first half. Jimmy Miyasaka came off the bench and also helped with the first half run. Matt Rosser had some highlight plays throughout the game with some tip in dunks! Matt Rosser is Mr. Everything for Menehunes, he does it all. He plays great defense, rebounds, scores, shoots well, plays point at times and makes a few highlight real plays a game. He is the heart and sole to this team and is the Menehunes Franchise player. John Lopez did his part by clogging up the middle on defense and had a nice back door layup late in the second half. Scott Holbert played huge for the Menehunes. He really was the heart and sole to the defense of the Menehunes and dominated the paint. It was nice to see Billy Hofman back on the court and it showed as Menehunes got 81points for the game. Bottom line, Billy gets this team going. But the night belonged to "Big Shot" Ryan Lee, as he hit key 3point shots to stop Old Skool momentum, and helped Menehunes to win another Championship! The Brea League Finals MVP goes to "BIG SHOT" Ryan Lee!

2011 Central Cal Cobra Tournament Champions!
2011 Cobras Tournament Champions! Left: Nick Milan, Jarrod Carroll, Ryan Lee, Jimmy Miyasaka, Jason Murishige, Billy Hofman, Scott Holbert
Championship Game: Menehunes 69 defeat Central Cal Cobra Gold 55
The championship game started off as a war. Central Cal Cobras were a physical team and play well with each other. They are a complete team with veterans leading the way. The game started off slow but Menehunes picked it up. Menehunes gained a comfortable lead at the half and never looked back. There were a lot of amazing shots during the game but the shot of the game was by Ryan Lee. Ryan look went up against the Cobras center and had an AMAZING “Wind-mill reverse layup” off the glass and even finished it off by making the “And 1” free throw. Jarrod Carroll and Jimmy Miyasaka both had 23points however Jarrod stole two free throws from Jimmy Miyasaka. Jarrod actually had 21 points with 2 steals(2 free throws from his own teammate Jimmy)! It was a great tournament overall. Menehunes were tested throughout the tournament and the championship game was a classic for Menehunes. Cobras came out strong and they are well respected in the Menehune eyes. They played with a lot of heart and passion for the game.

Menehunes came out flat at the get go, but then turned it on in the second quarter. Sangha were hitting from the outside and had a lead midway through the first quarter, then the Menehunes turned it on and the rest was history. The Sangha played tough and were a well guard oriented team. Menehunes scoring was spread out but Jarrod Carroll lead the way with 21points. Jason Murishige played well and scored 8points. Nick Milan also played well getting a double-double, 16points and 10+ rebounds. Billy Hofman did a great job distributing the ball to everyone for open shots. Menehunes are trying to find a Home in the Japanese community.
http://www.budokanoflosangeles.com
There will not be a better fit for the Menehunes then Budokan. Menehunes G.M. Jimmy Miyasaka is full Japanese and is in charge of this Asian American Club Basketball team. Its really rare to see a Full Japanese basketball player make it through the NCAA College basketball and just a shot away from winning a national title. Jimmy Miyasaka is working on contacting BUDOKAN to try and use this as the Menehunes Home. "We can show the Japanese community in Little Tokyo good quality basketball. We can also display our talent as to why Menehunes are contenders as a top Asian American Basketball Club team in America. Menehunes will even use the name "Budokan Menehunes" when they play in top tournaments to represent the Japanese community"...G.M. Jimmy Miyasaka... But Budokan has 4 full sized basketball courts as well as Kendo(Japanese martial arts), Volleyball courts, and other sports activities. Menehunes will even host youth basketball camps if Budokan will work with them as well as even host a Menehune Invitational tournament at Budokan if they form a partnership. Right now G.M. Jimmy Miyasaka is in the emailing and calling stage, so hopefully things work out between Menehune Basketball and Budokan. We have our fingers crossed for an answer that we are looking for.

He scored all of his 25 points in the first half going 7 for 9 from down town. Scott Holbert lead the way inside showing why he owns the paint. Reuben Medina set up his teammates on the spot, while Pierre Recinto was hitting jump shot after jump shot. Ryan Lee was also playing great defense as well as. John Lopez played well cleaning up the boards. Even Phillip Miyasaka pitched in with 7 points for the game. Menehunes take on the winner of "Nothing to Loose" or "Bring it". May 26, 2011 Menehunes go undefeated for regular season 7-0
Marc Factora, straight from the Hawaiian Islands.
Menehunes bombed away making 16 3-point shots for the game. Menehunes didnt have there top three leading scores Jarrod Carroll (22ppg), Billy Hofman (21ppg), and Matt Rosser (17ppg), and there center Scott Holbert who grabs 10+ rebounds a game. However Menehunes still managed to put up 85 points for the game lead by Pierre Recinto with a game high 21points. Menehunes were practicing for the Tigers Tournament. Marc Factora, just arrived from Hawaii a few hours prior to the game, made an appearance for the Menehunes while scoring 4 points and had 6 rebounds. Bryant So, Menehunes center made an appearance also. Bryant, a legend in the Brea League knows everyone in that league. Bryant had a solid game also with 4points and 8 rebounds in limited action. Ryan Lee ran point most of the game, while playing great defense and nailed 2-3pointers himself out there. Coach and Photographer Phillip Miyasaka, scored 7points, making an instant impact. Phillip was taking photos for the first 15minutes of the game then subbed in and went to work on the court just as much as he does off the court. Reuben Medina was solid hitting from the outside and battling inside on defense. John Lopez got into the mix by nailing 3-3pointers for the game, while showing the defense that they have to play some defense on him. Jimmy Miyasaka had 16 points, 4-3pointers, was still trying to find his rhythm after coming off of knee surgery. He just isn't the same like before. I think its close to retirement for him. Menehunes open up playoffs next week Thursday, however they have the BIG Tigers Tournament this weekend 28-30. But first a big shout out to Britt Sumida, Jimmy Miyasaka's Girlfriend, as her birthday is on May 27th.

Week 7: Menehunes 63 defeats Nothing to Loose 57 for a 6-0 record. May 19, 2011
The game wasnt pretty, but Menehunes jumped out to a quick lead then came Nothing to Loose to cut it to a 3 point game at the half. Menehunes then went off and got a comfortable 10point lead in the second half, however Nothing to Loose came back and actually took the lead 51 to 48. Jimmy Miyasaka(13points) made a 3 pointer to tie it up, Scott Holbert(11points-14rebounds) followed up a miss shot with a key put back while Jarrod Carroll(Team High 20points) made a big 3point shot on the top of the key and followed that up by a pair of free throws. Matt Rosser put on the final blow with his third dunk of the game to put the Menehunes up by 11 points before, Nothing To Loose made a 3point and a layup to cut it to 6points. Matt Rosser(14points) was putting on a display with his athletic ability. This was Menehunes lowest scoring game. Nothing to Loose had a game plan to walk the ball up every position. However Menehunes adjusted on defense and locked them down late in the second half. Menehunes didnt have the best shooting night but came through at the end when it was needed.

A premiere league in Southern California, was founded by Commissioner Hanz Jimenez. Hanz goal was to create a league that consists of top players in the Southern California region. At times they have NBA players, pro players, college players, ex college players, and those competitive weekend legends trying to create a name for themselves in his league. Nobody knows Hanz is actually Asian himself.
This maybe the next league the Menehunes may get into. If Superstar Basketball can make a weekday league then that will be perfect for the Menehunes, since weekends are busy with other Asian leagues.
If your a team that is looking for excellent competition then this is the league to get into! Superstar Basketball does a great job with top 5 vidio highlights from the weekend game. They do full stats, hall of fame, all-star game, 3-point competition, slam-dunk contest, etc... Its a league full of excitement! Menehunes are working on trying to get sponsors so they can play in this league. If you want to be a proud sponsor of one of the top Asian American Basketball Teams in the country please email us at: [email protected]

Week 6: Menehues 86 defeat defending champs "T-it-up" 75, May 12, 2011
Matt Rosser goes up for a dunk!
Menehunes played against the defending champions without there top two scores Billy Hofman (Avg 21.3ppg, out with a sprained ankle) and Jarrod Carroll (Avg 22.7ppg, out coaching Club Volleyball), but still pulled out the "W" beating "T-It-Up" 86 to 75 in the prime time game at 9:15pm. The Menehunes only had 6 players out there: Matt Rosser, John Lopez, Ryan Lee, Scott Holbert, Reuben Medina, and G.M. Jimmy Miyasaka. The game started out slow but Menehunes quickly picked up the pace and was up by at most 22 points of the ball game. Matt Rosser, who had 17points, was the point guard for the Menehunes and led the way, setting up the Menehunes for 3pointers as well as layups. Scott Holbert, who had 10points, dominated the paint once again and shot perfect from the free throw line going 4 for 4. Scott ended up with a double double(10pts-14rbs). Reuben Medina, who had 20points, was taking it to the basket strong as well as hitting from the outside. Ryan Lee, who had 6points, was also finishing layup after layup as well as setting up everyone for open shots. Jimmy Miyasaka, who finished with 26 points, came out hitting a few 3 pointers of his own. "We missed our starting point guard Billy Hofman and we hope he recovers ASAP! Menehunes are not the same without Billy on the court. We also missed our scoring machine Jarrod Carroll. I hope he can make it out to the rest of the games and help us win the Brea League title. We also missed Pierre Recinto who showed his smooth touch from the outside by leading the way with 25 points last game"...G.M. Jimmy M.... Breaking news!: May 13, 2011
Billy is in the rehab process to get back ASAP on the court for the Menehunes.
Billy Hofman's right ankle
Menehunes Point Guard Billy Hofman, is using his own ethnic background way of "Chinese healing" style of medicine "acupuncture" to help with healing process of his badly sprained ankle.
Acupuncture is an alternative medicine that treats patients by insertion and manipulation of needles in the body. Its proponents variously claim that it relievespain, treats infertility, treats disease, prevents disease, promotes general health, or can be used for therapeuticpurposes.[1] Acupuncture being effective beyond theplacebo effect has never been proven, except some pain relieving applications, though the latter results are somewhat inconsistent as well. Acupuncture typically incorporates traditional Chinese medicine as an integral part of its practice and theory.
Billy was undercut while going for a block and landed on the opponents foot. His ankle popped out and luckily popped back in. Billy was in a lot of pain and the Menehune Ohana was holding there breath, hoping Billy will be okay. Get WELL SOON BILLY!!! Menehunes need you on the court!

Week 5: Menehunes are now 4-0, by defeating "Bring It". May 5, 2011
Another week of basketball! Menehunes are back at it defeating "Bring It' by 48 points. This week Menehunes had there point guard Billy Hofman back in action leading the way with assist after assist, but started off the game with an AIR BALL! but got back to right where he left off in scoring ending up with 14 points. Billy Hofman's girlfriend had a few words about Billy's shot, "Billy's AIR BALL at the beginning of the game was definitely evidence of his 2 week spring break"...Heather Michie... However Pierre Recinto came out on fire! Knocking down shot after shot for the Menehunes, Pierre lead the way with 25points. Reuben Medina was also firing on all cylinders scoring 13 points and Ryan Lee hitting those long bombers who finished with 12points! Scott Holbert had a special someone in the crowd and dominated the paint! He came up huge for Menehunes on the rebounds and inside scoring. Scott had a nice game grabbing more than 10+ rebounds out there while scoring 9 points, going 3 out of 4 from the free throw line.. G.M. Jimmy Miyasaka made his official debut after being out from Knee Surgery and struggled a bit finding his rhythm for his shot. "It is nice to be back out there with my team, but I have to find my rhythm on the court"... Jimmy M... Jimmy ended up with 21 points for the ball gain. But everyone was hitting from behind the arc and showed why Menehunes is a team to reckon with! Menehunes show why they are a top Asian Team in the country!

Week 4: Menehunes 92 defeats Sorry in Advance 52, April 28, 2010
Menehue hit the court again this week. The game started off slow and sloppy, but then once when the Menehunes got going...the rest was history! Menehunes had Virgil Buensuceso aka "J.R." who made his debut for the Ohana and got everyone going. Jarrod Carroll once again lead the way in scoring and the highlight of the night was when Scott Holbert crossed over his defender and went middle and had a two handed tamahawlk dunk on a guy!!! He came back and then SWOOSHED a 3-pointer the very next play!! The Menehunes had there shots going from behind the arc. Ryan Lee was hitting, Reuben Medina was hitting, John Lopez was hitting, and Pierre finally came alive from the floor. But what really got the team going was J.R. who had assist after assist after assist... G.M. Jimmy Miyasaka made his season debut with 3 minutes to go in the first half. Overall The Menehunes played unselfish and it showed on the court. Menehunes advance to 3-0 for league play.

Month of April: "APRIL FOOLS?!!!!"
The month of April brings a lot of questions??? Is captain Jimmy Miyasaka going to come back this month to play? Are the Menehunes Jerseys going to ever come in? Is the ABA ever going to let the Menehunes back into there league? When will the Menehunes ever play together again?Who are we fooling?
Well as for Jimmy Miyasaka, he still needs at least another month of rehabbing his knee that he got surgery on.
As for the jerseys, we are hoping to get them in from the Philippines by April 12th.
ABA ever letting us back in?? Thats a fool! They keep on putting off the Menehunes, the commissioner doesn't ever respond back to the emails that were sent, nor does he ever call G.M. Jimmy back on a timely basis. Menehunes had to reach him from a 3rd party to just get an answer if they were going to play or not. Then the ABA league changes there rules on a daily basis so the Menehunes dont qualify to even play in the league anymore.
Will the Menehunes ever play together again? Thats not a fool, thats a fact! You can catch the Menehunes on Thursday night at the Brea community center, playing in the Gold Division. Its the Menehunes mix ethnicity team with some of the original Menehune players on there roster.
Stay tuned for updates by clicking on the "schedule" tab and the "news" tab.

Menehunes win season opener and are 1-0 in league play! 4-7-2011
What a game! Brea Community Center League really gave it to the Menehunes for there first game, sticking it to them by making them play there top team in there Thursday night leagues. The game was a physical game and Menehunes were out sized. However brains are more important then athletic ability or height. Menehunes proved that on Thursday night. Menehuens pulled off the victory 84 to 83, on Reuben Medina's Free throw with 7 seconds remaining of regulation. Menehunes were lead by Billy Hofman's 26 points. Jarrod Carroll had 23points, Ryan Lee and Reuben Medina both had 9pts, Scott Holbert had 8points, Pierre Recinto had 5points, and team captain Jimmy Miyasaka tailed in with 4points in 0minutes of action! Menehunes played a tough game and didnt back down to anything. The game got heated when a player throw an elbow at Scott's head after the play was over. But the reffs took care of them and Menehunes just continued to play on. Scott Holbert came out with an important steal that lead to Reuben's winning free throw. Menehunes were short on players. They were missing center John Lopez, due to food poisoning, and Matt Rosser due to a working schedule conflict. But Menehunes dug deep with there 6 and 1/2(Jimmy) man roster. Coach Jimmy came up huge with those 4 points from the line. Reuben Medina came up huge grabbing boards and playing down low. Ryan Lee "Mr. Do It All" played ever where tonight, grabbing rebounds, making put backs, setting up his teammates, steals, you name it, he did it! Jarrod Carroll played well despite the foul trouble and hit some huge shots down the stretch for the Menehunes. Pierre came up big by hitting a 3pter to give the Menehunes some momentum in the second half. And Big Scott (Chris Minns) came up huge. Using all of his fouls to dominate the paint! He even took a charge! But at the end of the day Billy Hofman was the Menehunes Heart and sole. He lead the team the whole game and came up big by hitting 5-3pters for the game and he, so rarely, made a POST move tonight! Got Coach Jimmy off his feet!! Menehunes are excited about this season and team. Look out for us next Thursday at 8:20pm. Please check out the schedule, Click here
Strong debut for Menehunes in the Brea Community Center league: Menehunes win 74-42, March 31, 2011
Menehunes started off slow but turned things on. This game was just an evaluation game for a new league/season. Menehunes were a little short on players but ended up with 6 players. Billy Hofman, Jarrod Carroll, Pierre Recinto, John Lopez(New Player), Scott Holbert, and Richy Miyasaka suited up for Menehunes. Menehunes were lead by Billy Hofman. Billy once again ran the show, while Jarrod Carroll made some spectacular finishes. The first half was slow and the score was tied up at 33-33 at the half. But then the Menehunes turned it on with John Lopez and Pierre Recinto smooth shooting from the outside. Scott dominated the paint once again, while even Richy made a layup. He did have some air-ball assists but either way he was good sport about it and played on. Britt Sumida and Yolanda Torres was in attendance with Jarrod Carroll little niece who was her water girl. The Menehunes did turn it on and ended up winning 74 to 42. I am pretty sure that the league will move Menehunes into a higher division.
Next week we are waiting for Matt Rosser to make his Menehune Debut for this season. Hopefully Ryan Lee can get out of work on time and Reuben recovers from an ankle injury. Coach/G.M. Jimmy Miyasaka needs another month to rehab his knee before he can get back to action with the Menehunes. But you will see him on the side line coaching the team.

Fortunately enough, his mother and coach Dr. Anne Matsushima and father Coach Richard Miyasaka both took me under their wings and adopted me into their basketball family! I also played with Phillip, Jimmy's younger brother growing up. Ever since, Jimmy and I have been brothers and his family are like my second family! The Menehunes were led by there coach and team captain Jimmy with 21points and 10 rebounds for a double double. Jarrod Carroll played big for the Menehunes with 17 points and made some key baskets late in the second half to seal the deal. Billy Hofman played an important role in distributing the ball and finding the open guys. Ryan Lee did all the little things to help the Menehunes capture there 6th ABA championship. Some of the new players on the Menehune team are Scott Holbert who played great defense and dominated the boards. He was an inside presence out there on the court. John Han also contributed in the win by making a layup. Bryant So dominated the boards as well and is such a great team player. He just wants to win and does whatever it takes. He played a key role in the Menehunes victory. Reuben a long time Menehune came out for the playoffs and was a part of 5 ABA championships with Menehunes. Justin Yun had a severe neck injury and did not play in the semifinals and championship game. All and all the Menehunes played well and proved why they were the champions with that perfect 12-0 record. They came back from being down by as much as 14points in the semi final game and dominated the championship game. The other team tried to slow the pace down but the Menehunes can also play a half court game as well. Coach Phillip said "The reason why we were down was because Jimmy started".... Captain Jimmy had NO COMMENT on that! Look out for the return of the Menehunes for next season. The ABA gave the Menehunes a bye during the Winter Holidays.
Semifinal score: Menehunes 74 Defeated. Illmatic 59
Championship Score: Menehunes 63 Defeated Triple Threat 54
Semifinal game story:
Illmatic came out on fire and was up by as much as 14points in the first half. However the Menehunes made there run to go up by 1 point at the half. Menehunes came out and made there run in the second half to have a comfortable lead by as much as 16points and ended winning by 9points. Menehunes beat a young and athletic team but with experience and team work the Menehunes dominated and advanced on to the championship game.
Championship game story:
Menehunes took on an experienced "Triple Threat" team. It was a grind out game. The "Reason" had a great game plan to really slow the game down to keep Menehunes from running. It was a 4 point game at the half. But the Menehunes went on a run in the second half to go up by as much as 12 points however "Triple Threat" answered back on a 9-0 run to bring the game to as close as to 3 points. Menehunes then went on and hit some big 3point shots and some transition layups to seal the game.
So we wanted to ask Scott Holbert what his thought was on the season and winning his first ABA Championship:
"It feels good, a lot of hard work.... I'd like to say it was a team effort. And it was. I felt like like we really came together. Although, its pretty obvious that my individual contribution was phenomenal... All those extra reps in the gym payed off and putting in the extra time really made the difference. This championship win isn't just just for me or the other guys on the team. It's for that 10 year old kid somewhere. Putting up those jumpers, running those 17s, and working hard to one day become a champion. This victory is proof that If you work hard and set your mind on a goal, you can accomplish anything!"
Scott Holbert is trying to make it to the Hall of Fame in the Menehune Basketball organization.

Week 6: Menehunes defeated Samurais 83-52 with the Return of JARROD CARROLL
Going into this weeks game Samurais were 4-1 and Menehunes were 4-0. This game was a battle for the top spot. At the half the game was close but then the Menehunes went on a run. Jarrod Carroll and Jimmy Miyasaka had 22 points each, Justin Yun had 18 points, Billy Hofman had 11points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists, Bryant So had 8points and 6 rebounds and Ryan Lee tailed in with 2 points and the winning deflection for his football game that he had to run to. Menehunes are now 5-0 and leads the ABA in scoring. Next week they have a double header at 7:15 and at 8pm. Jarrod Carroll came back with vengeance from missing last weeks game. He had 14 of his 22 points in the first half. Bryant So did an excellent job controlling the paint with his defense and grabbing the boards. I'd say the statistician missed a lot of his rebounds. Bryant also had a bunch of blocks. He stepped up big for Menehunes in the absence of Scott Holbert due to an infection of his lymph nodes. Menehunes are now 5-0 for the season.

Week 5: "It was raining 3 pointers"
Menehunes 105 defeated Stillmatic 63
Another Impressive win for Menehunes who are 4-0. The Menehunes made so many 3 pointers that they didnt even bother to post the box scores up correctly on there website. Menehunes lead the league in points with 354 points in 4 games. (88.5 points per a game) A recap of the game without box scores is tough but as what was seen on the court Billy Hofman, was the floor general out there. Jarrod Carroll was scoring at will out there and Justin Yun was making 3pointers from all over on the court. Menehunes were up by 15 points when "Coach Jimmy" came into the game. Bryant So did an awesome job on the boards with Scott Holbert. If the ABA updates there stats correctly I will have a better story for you all. Menehunes are undefeated in the ABA league.

Week 4: "Was that really Billy Hofman? He's BACK!"
Menehunes 75 defeated Big Dongs 63
How good is it to see a legend, come back to life! Billy Hofman had his break out game against the undefeated "Big Dongs." Billy lead the way with 24pts-6rbs-5assists. Those are some stellar numbers for a point guard. Billy made 4-3pters and was 100% from the free throw line. Billy definitely took the game into his own hands and made some amazing passes for easy layups as well as coming off the "BEST SCREENS" for open 3 pointers. Justin Yun had 14points(4-3pters), Scott Holbert had 11pts-7rbs(100% at the charity strike/LEADS TEAM in FT%), Ryan Lee had 2pts-5rbs-4steals-2 assists(was in there when Menehunes had there biggest lead), Bryant So had 12pts-15rbs (double-double) Rebounding machine,"Coach" Phillip Miyasaka had 2rbs-1 assist, and Jimmy Miyasaka had 12pts-14 rbs-5assists!(career high for assist, double-double). Menehunes are now 3-0 in ABA league play.
