Game 9: CHAMPIONSHIP GAME: Dr. Miyasaka Optometry 60 defeated DAWGZ 43 to win the first Menehunes Invitational Basketball tournament in Hawaii.
DAWGZ took care of business at the 2:30pm game earlier in the day to give them the birth to the Championship title game where Dr. Miyasaka Optometry had to wait patiently to see who they were going to play. Dawgz got the game time they wanted having a full solid lineup playing Dr. Miyasaka Optometry. The game started off going back and forth with DAWGZ taking a quick lead with Thomas Pyo's 3 pointers then Dr. Miyasaka Optometry made a come back with Chris Hoe hitting three 3 pointers in a row of his own. DAWGZ were led by big man Salele Ali'ifua doulbe double 11points 10 rebounds as Dr. Miyasaka Optometry was short handed not having there big man Nick Milan for the later Championship game but they spread the court and 4 players scored double figures. Ty Kono and Kenny Kitamura penetrated and got the shooters the ball in positions they could be productive in. Ryan Chong for Dawgz sparked a run in the second half but Dr. Miyasaka Optometry chipped away possession with Rob Scklov double double 10points,12 rebounds and David Darby 12 points 6 rebounds and 4 assists, getting it going and Corey Morgan break away layups to put the game away. Co-MVPs: Chris Hoe's 15 points and Jimmy Miyasaka 15 points, 12 rebounds, 2 assits lead all scorers for the game as Dr. Miyasaka Optometry took home the 1st Menehunes Invitational Championship with a 60-43 victory. Game 8: SLEBER 93 defeated REBELS 82
In the most anticipated game of the tournament came down to the last game for each team. A joint team in various leagues, they split up for this tournament making it a friendly but competitive game for all the marbles and bragging rights. SLEBERS started off the game strong at the get go where the REBELS made a push with Chris Tenoso tournament high 38 point performance. This was the highest scoring game of the tournament as the game brought out the best of each team. Van Hugo for scored a team high 32 points for SLEBER as this game went back and forth until SLEBER pulled out the victory with a high scoring 93 to 82 winning performance. Both teams showed great sportsmanship throughout the game even though deep down inside neither team wanted to lose. We will be seeing SLEBER in the Menehune Basketball League starting April 8th, 2017 and hopefully have Rebels in the league one day soon. We look forward to having both teams back in next years Menehunes Invitational Basketball Tournament. Game Stats/Box Scores
Game 7: Yellow Storm California 57 Defeated Hooliganz 52 in Overtime
Yellow Storm California was just 4 points away from the Championship game but DAWGZ took care of business in the game prior with there win over REBELS which then lead up to the match up. Holliganz jumped out to a quick lead at the get go as Yellow Storm was trying to find there shooting touch from behind the arc. Hooliganz looked dominant with Cozai Chapman energetic finishes at the rim as he had a team high 19 points. However like the previous day Yellow Storm found there shooting touch. Darin Nakauchi lead the way with 26 points, 12 rebounds, and 4 assist, while Christian Lee added 16 points and 11 rebounds of his own. In overtime Yellow Storm chipped away to take a 5 point lead that wont the game. Yellow Storm just had 5 active players the whole tournament with one sub on Friday night but they definitely played one of the best team basketball in the tournament. Hooliganz improved as a team in each game. Both teams will look solid in next years tournament as this was there first appearance in a Hawaii basketball tournament. Game 6: DAWGZ 62 defeat REBELS 55
At the time this was the most important game of the tournament because the winner of this game will determine who will make it to the Championship game. In Pool B, DAWGZ defeated Yellow Storm California a day earlier by 3 points, as Yellow Storm California defeated REBELS by 10 points. If Rebels defeated DAWGZ by 18 points then REBELS would be going to the Championship game. If REBELS just won by 17 or less then Yellow Storm California would be going to the Championship game. But DAWGZ controlled there own destiny by winning the game 62 to 55. Rebels jumped out to a quick lead by as much as 8 points with Chris Tenoso and Joseph Nishimura leading the way. However just like yesterday Rebels hit a wall and DAWGZ came clawing back. Leading the way was Japanese Sensation Yudai Kojima who had a game high 22 points. Dawgz added Thomas Pyo in place of injured Reed Kamimura who had 18 points to lead a come back. DAWGZ pulled it out in the last minute of the game when Thomas hit a dagger 3 pointer in the corner to clinch there berth in the championship game at 4:45pm. Game Stats/Box Scores
Game 5: SLEBER 53 Defeated Holliganz 44
The second game for each team in Pool A was a battle as both team struggled in the first 10 minutes of the first half knotted at 7 a piece. SLEBER went on a run as Van Hugo and Ross Silva started to heat up. Holliganz then answered back with Dallas Asuncion and Rahni FIsher bringing back Hooliganz to make it a game. Alex Tungpalan hit a 3 pointer right at the half to take a 30 to 29 lead over SLEBER. The first 5 minutes of the second half went back and forth but it was SLEBER who started to pull away when Brian Legaspi got hot from the outside. Hooliganz captain Shawn Cambra, "Mr. Energy Man", helped Hooliganz to cut it to 3 points with his 5points-5rebounds, with 4 minutes left but SLEBER pulled away for a 53-44 victory. Game 4: POOL B, DAWGZ 60 defeated Yellow Storm California 48
This was the game of the night as Yellow Storm California made there epic comeback in first game and was trying to keep there hot shooting going. Dawgz came in with size, athleticism, and numbers. Yellow Storm California had just 6 guys that played the whole game as they couldn't stop Cameron Roberts on the inside. Salele Ali'ifua was big in the middle for Dawgz. Yellow Storm hot shooting from Kyler Lee kept them up all the way until the second half with 7 minutes. Fatigue was settling in as Yudai Kojima from Dogz ignited them with his drives to the baskets. Dawgz had a 10 point lead with under a minute before Yellow Storm pressed and made 2 key steals and converted on it to cut it down to 3 points. Yudai then got the ball with 2 seconds left and put up a fade away 3 pointer to let time run out. With Yellow storm being 1-1, they would have to wait for DAWGZ vs Rebels game to take place to determine if they have a chance at winning it. Hooliganz made there tournament debut with a well rounded team that had height and speed. Holliganz was lead by Tevor Ellis, who scored as 12 points and Dallas who chipped in 11 points. Dr. Miyasaka Optometry started the game off right where they left off. Led by Jimmy Miyasaka team high and game high 14 points he kept his hot first half shooting going. David Darby 10points, Rob Shklov 10 points and Nick Milan's 12 points kept Dr. Miyasaka Optometry lead going in the second half. Hooliganz made a run during the second half when team captain Shawn Cambra came off the bench to spark the fire. Sharp shooting Alex Tungpalan hit a 3 point to cut it within 8 points but Dr. Miyasaka Optometry kept there outside shooting going with with Chris Hoe hitting 3 3-pointers in the second half to secure the victory. The game started out lop sided at the get go as the home team Rebels got out to a quick 17-0 lead. Yellow Storm looks like they left there game in California as they were on vacation mode but soon surprised the whole Kaimuki Park Gym with there epic comeback. Yellow Storm CA came clawing there way back to to cut the deficit to 27 to 31 at the half as they found there touch from behind the arc. Rebels did there best to keep there lead as Joseph Nishimura was taking it to the basket. However Yellow Storm Darin Nakauchi, Kyler Lee, and Christian Lee went on a scoring spree. Darrin Nakauchi made a key steal and a lay up with 12 minutes in the second half made it all tied up at 41. Junn Ramirez tried his best to keep his team in the game as he hit 3 NBA 3 pointers himself. But once Yellow Storms got going they pulled off a convincing victory by 10points. The game started off with SLEBER taking a lead in the first half. Lead by Brian Legaspi's hot shooting in the first half SLEBER was up by as much as 10 points as Dr. Miyasaka Optometry came storming back with there hot shooting from behind the arc. Sleber Captain Justin Miranda assembled a well mixed group of guys that can shoot from the outside as well as take it to the rim in the inside. Dr. Miyasaka Optometry made there run mid way through the first half as Captain Jimmy Miyasaka scored 15 first half points as Nick Milan made a half court buzzer beater to end the first half with Dr. Miyasaka Optometry up 50 to 46 at the half. In the second half it went back and forth but Dr. Miyasaka Optometry players Rob Shklov, Nick Milan, and David Darby got it going as they finished off the game scoring 17-Rob, 17-Nick, and 18-David. SLEBER hung in there with Ross Silva's 3 point shooting as Rex started to get hot tailing in 16 points himself Captain Jimmy Miyasaka had the game high of 23 points which included 6-3pointers. The game was all from behind the arc as Dr. Miyasaka made a total of 18 - 3 pointers as SLEBERS made 11 - 3 pointers as well. "Fami-LEE" Yellow Storm (Pasadena, California)Yellow Strom will make its way out to the Hawaiian Islands of Hawaii. They are a true family team as team captain Chris Lee is well known in the Asian American Basketball community in California. Chris Lee and brother Addison Lee been playing basketball for decades together and are now mentoring the next generation of basketball players (Christian and Kyler Lee) to carry on the tradition keeping a team going.
Yellow Strom also has Darin Nakauchi, who plays a huge role in Ballislife company, and is a product of the Pasadana Bruins Asian Basketball Organization in Pasadena, CA. Roster:
Hooliganz (Aina Haina, Oahu/Hawaii)Holliganz are a group of brothers looking forward to compete every week in the Menehune Basketball Hawaii League Monday nights. Lead by Team Captain/Coach Shawn Cambra he assembled a young, talented, and exciting team. Watch out for there fast pace play and outside shooting. They can get hot really quick and put up points on the score board in a blink of an eye.
They represent the Monday night Menehune Basketball Hawaii League division and is currently contending for the championship.
Dr. Miyasaka Optometry (Kaimuki, Oahu/Hawaii)Dr. Miyasaka Optometry is a new team in the Hawaii basketball word. They took a 12 year break from playing with each other but is trying to make another push at forming the team that was from back in the day.
Dr. Miyasaka Optometry will be bringing in there Thursday division team to participate in this tournament. Dr. Miyasaka Optometry has multiple teams that play in different caliber tournaments and leagues. A local home grown Kaimuki team that grew up playing at the parks and recreation. DAWGZ (Hawaii Kai, Oahu/Hawaii)DAWGZ has been playing in the Menehune Basketball league for all 3 seasons. They are currently in 2nd place for the Monday night league. Captain Ryan Chong has assembled a well balanced team with guards as well as bigs. They are in contention for winning the Monday division and is looking to compete against new teams.
REBELS (Waikele, Oahu/Hawaii)The Rebels been playing in Asian/Filipino Tournaments since 2000. They are old school ballers! They play in multiple leagues in the area like the well established Friendship league on Tuesday nights. The team consists of high IQ basketball veterans. The have shooters from the outside as well as slashers that can push the tempo.
Captain Junn Ramirez is the heart of the Rebels as he kept them together for nearly 20 years in the Fil-Am community as well as Hawaii.
SLEBER (Kalihi, Oahu/Hawaii)Team SLEBER plays in various leagues in Oahu. They go from the West Side to the East side but they are always a contending team. Player/Captain Justin Miranda will be bringing a well balanced lineup to the tournament. They will soon be playing in the Menehune Saturday League coming up.

Modified Rules for tournament:
- 2 x 18 minute halves
- 1 - 2 minute overtime, then sudden death (First point wins)
- AUTOMATIC TECHNICAL FOUL FOR TOUCHING ANY PART OF THE BACKBOARD (KAIMUKI PARK RULES), opposing team will get an automatic 2points.
- Clock will run if a team is up by 11 points or more
- If a team calls the game early, they will forfeit any tie breakers for seeding purposes.
- A player MUST play in 1 pool game to qualify for the 3rd game.
- Each player must sign the waiver form prior to playing.
- Each player is responsible for his own medical insurance.
- ABSOLUTELY NO ALCOHOL IS ALLOWED ANYWHERE ON THE FACILITY
- No eating in the gym
- While water/sports drinks are allowed, please make sure you throw them away in the trash.
- Most NCAA rules will apply (unless superseded by house rules)
- Free throws will be on the release of the ball before you may enter the lane.
- Five fouls disqualifies a player; a technical foul counts as a personal and a team foul.
- Team fouls carry over into overtime
- Once a player receives three technical fouls, the player will be banned from the league immediately and potentially future seasons.
- Team will shoot two free throws and be given the ball.
- First technical received by any player will need to be substituted out by another player. Player must sit out at least 5 mins of game clock time.
- Second technical will result 1 game suspension from the league and a $50 fine. Must be paid prior to next scheduled game.
- Games will consist of two 17 minute halves (Weekday Division), 18 minute halves(Weekend), 30 second shot clock(when present) or UPON REQUEST(Score table will have a stop watch), running time; stop time will occur last 15 seconds of the first half and last two minutes of second half (second half only). (running clock if lead is 15pts or more under two minutes)
- Half time will be 1:00 long
- Overtime Weeknight league – Sudden death
- Overtime (C, B, A Weekend Divisions) will be 2 minutes, stop time, one time out each.
- If the game is tied after one overtime, the game will be decided by sudden death (non playoff games). (first team to score)
- During playoffs, if game is tied after one overtime. There will be 2 min stop time no timeouts per team. It will continue until there is a winner.
- Teams will receive 1-3 minute warm up time between each game. (Depending on the time-WE NEED TO TRY TO STAY ON TIME FOR GYM RENTAL PURPOSES)
- Each team will receive 3 timeouts per game, 1 time out in the first half and 2 in the second half. NO CARRYING OVER.
- Teams will receive one time out during the overtime (no carry over).
- The ball can be advanced to half court during the SECOND HALF of the game and under two minutes remaining on a made basket or a non-basketball move.
- No jewelry or headwear allowed during the game.
- Teams will be required to have jerseys for every player if not it will be +2 point awarded for each non-jersey or double number player plus a team foul.
- The jersey/shirt must have a number on either the front or back, visible for the officials to see.
- No duplicate numbers (penalty +2 points awarded to the opposing team + 1 team foul)
- Technical foul/Penalty points will be assessed if those requirements are not met.
- The Game ball will be supplied by Menehune Basketball
- Teams may start a game with FOUR players
- There will be a five minute grace period before game is considered a forfeit
- Players from other teams are NOT allowed to play with any other team in the league.
- Spectators are not allowed to participate with any team.
- Game can be played with four player for entirety of the game
- Please arrive on time.
- Penalty for a forfeit will result in a $50.00 fine and your team will not be able to play in the next game until it is paid.
- If there is a forfeit by two teams, both teams need to pay the $50 fine to the league commissioner.
- All players participating in the league must be on the team roster.
- Every team must submit a roster before the league starts
- Only players on the active roster can participate in the playoffs.
- Players must play TWO regular season game in order to participate in the playoffs.
- Poor sportsmanship/fights
- Any poor sportsmanship during the course of the league will result in the player being removed from the remainder of the game and depending on the severity of his/her action may be kicked out of the league permanently.
- Fighting will NOT be tolerated and if you violate this rule, the player will be banned immediately from the league. NO REFUNDS!!!!
- Dunking is NOT allowed. (CITY AND COUNTY OF HONOLULU RULES)
- Penalty will be a team technical foul. Automatic 2 points awarded to team. ANYONE THAT DUNKS WILL BE IMMEDIATELY EJECTED FROM THE GAME AND SUSPENDED 1 GAMES.
- No intentionally slapping the backboard (Automatic Technical foul)
- If the game is held at a gym that allows dunking, then no technical foul would be assessed for a dunk.
- Games at Kaimuki Park, PLEASE STAY OFF THE BACKBOARDS! NO SLAPPING or purposely shaking the backboards. It is there policy that we need to abide. WE DON’T WANT TO GET KICKED OUT!

- Least points allowed amongst tied teams (Defense wins championships!)
- Please pick up your trash and keep sports drinks in your bag and off of the gym floor.
- All players must agree to and sign the consent/waiver form before playing in the game.
- Menehune Basketball and any park gym will have the right to band a player form participating in any games if they do not abide by the rules.
- Please meet new people and have a fun time in the Menehune Basketball League!
